Construction Skills Course Overview

This training course is designed to provide learners with the knowledge, skills and competencies to undertake a range of construction tasks in various trades.  It’s a good starting point if you are thinking of pursuing a career as a skilled construction operative or if you are contemplating an apprenticeship in one of the many construction trades. You will gain the knowledge, skills and experience from Mixing Cement, Laying Paving to Bricklaying, Carpentry, Plumbing, Painting etc. under various work conditions.

Learners will also get the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills required to work safely on construction sites without posing a risk to themselves or others. They will gain a range of extra certificates from Safe Pass, Manual Handling Techniques, Abrasive Wheels, Vehicle Banksman/Spotter, First Aid etc. and learn the correct operating procedures for small plant and machinery also.

Course Content

Work on a construction site environment understanding your duties and responsibilities at work including emergency procedures, working safely at heights, use of personal protective equipment, safety rules when using vehicles and mobile plant machinery and tools and equipment

Understand the mixing ratios of sand, lime and cement for various structures and foundations. Mixing concrete using a mobile electrically powered cement mixer. Transporting, placing, compacting and screeding a surface using hand and power tools for floating, colour mixing for various finishes.

Skill sample the various trade careers of Bricklaying, Plumbing, Carpentry, Painting & Decorating, Electrical work, Technical Drawing and Reading Plans to provide the learner with the necessary skills and experience to gain an opportunity to serve an apprenticeship or general operative in the construction trade.

Identify and explore personal strengths, talents, goals and values linked to good employment opportunities. Plan and achieve realistic work goals. Prepare for work interviews with potential employers. Prepare letters of application, CV preparation and completing application forms.

Work independently under supervision in a company relating to construction skills training and carry out the relevant tasks set out over the course of your work placement as directed by the placement company. This work placement will present you with the perfect chance to gain organised, valuable working experience before you decide where you want to work.
